Crafting With Colorful Feed Sack Cloth

Posted on

During the Great Depression, feed sacks were constructed of cotton fabric that often contained colorful prints. These bags were commonly repurposed to make clothing, curtains, and household decor. There are some product lines, such as Flowers for Freya, that promote these same types of prints. Feed sack cloth can be used to make many personal and household items that are unique.

Prints And Products

Fabric that has been inspired by materials that were sold many decades ago contain floral, plaid, and solid prints. Bright colors, pastel hues, cool tones, and bold lines may each hold a unique meaning to an individual crafter. For instance, cotton fabric that contains a multitude of flowers that are spread out along a bold yellow background could appear to be a representation of a bright summer day and the simplicity involved with spending time outdoors gardening or enjoying the scenery.

Fabric pieces are sold by the yard, by the strip, by the square, or by the bundle. Precut fabrics and bundled products can be used to make a large quilt or another extensive project. Pieces that are grouped together will complement one another and can be used to complete a project that is going to showcase color blocking techniques. Color blocking consists of using a series of fabric colors and styles that work well together.

Projects

Determining what type of project to tackle should play upon a crafter's independent skill level. Project guidelines and patterns are offered through a supplier. These principles and designs will aid with choosing fabric dimensions and sewing notions. Seasonal decor, baby items, holiday decor, mini and large quilts, and pillows are some popular items that are made with feed sack cloth.

Patterns can be used to create fashions that can be worn every day or during special occasions. A parent who has several young children may want to purchase a particular feed sack cloth variety that will allow them to create an ensemble of outfits that all go together. Embellishments can be used to amplify the style of a simple dress or pants suit that doesn't require a lot of fancy stitching.

Some embellishment types that are complementary to cotton weaves include embroidery, appliques, and lace. If a crafter is going to tackle a new type of project that is going to require precision, cutting mats and templates will assist with preparing fabric pieces that are a specific shape and size.
